- 1 loaf of French bread or Italian bread, sliced horizontally
- ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
- 3–4 cloves garlic, finely minced or grated
- 1 tablespoon fresh parsley or 1 tsp dried Italian seasoning
- ¼ tsp salt
- 1 ½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- ½ cup grated parmesan cheese
- Optional: pinch of red pepper flakes for heat
- Optional: fresh basil or oregano
- Optional: cheddar or provolone cheese
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with foil for easy cleanup.
- In a bowl, mix softened butter, minced garlic, salt, and herbs until smooth.
- Place bread halves cut-side up on the baking sheet. Spread the garlic butter evenly on both sides.
- Sprinkle mozzarella and parmesan cheese over the top.
- Bake for 10–12 minutes, until cheese is melted and bubbly. Broil for 1–2 minutes for a golden finish.
- Let cool slightly, slice, and serve warm.
Notes
Use crusty bread for the best results. For softer bread, wrap in foil before baking. To make it ahead, prepare and refrigerate unbaked — then bake fresh when ready to serve. This recipe is easy to customize with extra toppings or cheese blends!
